25 March 2016 – FINAS COE Archives (Digitization) Unit organized a visit to the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) which was located at Unit 1-7, Ground Floor, Menara UOA Bangsar, No.5 Jalan Bangsar Utama 1, 59000 Kuala Lumpur. MyIPO is responsible for the development and management of intellectual property system in Malaysia. Malaysia is one of the state parties to the Paris Convention and WHO. A Malaysian IP registration can be used as a basis for priority claim for countries which are party to these conventions.
The purpose of the visit was to seek MyIPO guidance on how to maximize the usage of our national audio visual treasure in terms of copyright and IP ownership. Mr Mohamed Fairuz Mohd Pilus, Director of MyIPO, explained in detail the importance of registering the IP rights of creative content with MyIPO
The session which lasted for more than 2 hours was interesting and highly enlightening. The lack of awareness and apathy by the creative content industry towards IP management in Malaysia is still high. Thus MyIPO and FINAS agreed to have further discussion on cooperation to assist the creative content industry on the need to register their content with MyIPO as a properly managed IP content can bring lucrative returns during the lifecycle of the copyright duration.
